What’s In A Name?

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the creation of The Wilder School, and with that, it is important that we share the story of our name.

Our name, Wilder, is a nod to the person who walked a Hero’s Journey and made it possible for us to do the same: Alfred F. Wilde, Jr.

Our Director, Jess, met Al when she was a college student at Boston University. For a few hours each week, Jess would visit and do a number of tasks that were difficult for someone with Multiple Sclerosis – loading/unloading a dishwasher, laundry, vacuuming, etc. Al not only appreciated the help, he enjoyed the company, and they began a friendship that would last 18 years.

In February 2019, Al’s health further deteriorated and he needed additional support. Despite living 8 hours away, Jess made trips to Boston and helped Al manage his increasingly complicated conditions. They spoke on the phone every day and worked with Al’s medical team to provide him with as great a quality of life as possible. Without family to help him, Jess became Al’s support system and Al became an extension of Jess’ family.

Al passed in March 2020 after heroically living with MS for over 30 years. He generously provided for Jess in his will and it is only through these funds that The Wilder School is possible. In March 2021, Jess created The Wilder School for not only her children, but others, so they could learn in an environment that honors their humanity while they grow to accomplish things Al would have been thrilled to see come to life.

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”
— Christopher Reeve
